Visual inspection with drones or borescopes

A PMI (Positive Material Identification) examination can be performed with the XRF (X-ray fluorescence analyzer) or a mobile spectral analyzer. The X-ray fluorescence analyzer XRF does not damage the test object in the least.

Mobile spectral analysis, on the other hand, detects specific elements that XRF cannot find, such as carbon.

Therefore, PMI is an important component of non-destructive testing, serving to ensure qualitative demands on materials.

PMI improves safety for people and equipment. It significantly contributes to the optimization of consistent manufacturing quality and to reduced product liability risks as a result.

Verification of delivered materials during the inbound goods inspection prevents later issues in the manufacturing process, as well as during acceptance of manufactured products.

Internationally, PMI examination is often used as an integral part of quality assurance and inspection plans.

PMI tests increasingly often happens as an additional control measure in the presence of the customer or their representative today, true to the motto of:

“He who knows nothing must believe everything”
(Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach 1830-1916)

XRF equipment

MICS International GmbH uses only new and approved X-ray fluorescence or spectral analysis equipment for its PMI tests.

We verify the following with our XRF type X-MET7500:

  • Stainless steels
  • Aluminium alloys
  • Nickel and cobalt alloys
  • Copper alloys
  • Tool Steel
  • Titanium alloys with determination of the elements from Mg to U

The material databases required for this are implemented in the instrument for the DIN, AISI, and JIS, ASME, ASTM etc…standards.

Our inspection staff are trained in handling of the devices and in radiation protection in accordance with the German X-ray Ordinance (X-ray safety law and legal requirements). The examiners are certified as radiation protection officers and officially licensed.
